INTRODUCTION
Our objective is to prove definitively the eminently arithmological nature of the Tarot. That's why, we won't enter card's symbolic meanings ; but we'll look them back, upper face taking account only their set's value.
22 major arcana : 22 triumphs
40 minor arcana : (40 numbered cars and 16 honors).
Each card is an " arcanum " or mystery. It has two sides : one colored, magnificently restored in its purity of origin by Philippe CAMOIN and Alexandre JODOROWSKY ; the other side, upper face, hidden to the look. In years 1970, I became weary of contradictory images and pictures of Tarot as well as prefabricated knowledges, plated artificially by authors belonging to various ideologies. I decided to medidate only on the 78 upper faces of the Tarot. Suddenly, the former became like a sea composed of 78 successive waves receiving from collective uncounscious oceanic depths, their signs, figures and colors.
HISTORICAL REVIEW
A deck of seventy - eight cards, outwardly for playing use ; inwardly, fundamental and basic esoreic reference. The most ancient game that has been preserved in quasi whole would date 1450 approximately. It concerns the medieval Tarot called the VISCONTI SFORZA . It is the nearly most complete game of 74 out of 78 arcana . The Tarot of Marseilles (1556) is the earliest complete deck known with 78 cards that the esoteric tradition has named " arcana " by reference to their occult meanings.
Major and minor arcana
Two sets or totalities appear immediately to whom opens the Tarot.
One of 56 cards : the minor arcana ; the other is made up of 22 triumphs the major arcana. Painted without numeration written on in the medieval tarot, the first numeration that made authority thereafter is dated to 1556 and belongs to the Tarot of Marseilles.
Minor arcana : pip and court cards
The 56 minor arcana are divided in 4 suits of signs :Wands, Cups, Swords and Coins.
Each suit comprises :
10 numbered or pip cards from one to ten,
plus four court cards : valet or page, queen, king and knight.
Therefore, the 56 minor arcana are divided in :
16 honors or court card (4 x 4 in each sign )
40 pip or numbered cards (4 x 10 in each sign).
Morever, an attentive reading shows that, on the 40 pip cards, are in reality drawn 220 signs.
In each suit (Wands orCups or Swords or Coins) 55 signs were painted :
1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10 = 55
55 x 4 colours ou signs = 220 (22 times the decade).
[Counting this way is typically pythagorean : the mathematical pythagorean triangular value of 10 is 55]
The 78 cards of Tarot reveal a pythagorean structure that the reader will find here completely unfolded. In the following diagrams, the arcana are represented by a lozend, diamond-shaped - as if one could only see the upper face of each arcanum.
